Evergreen Brick Works // Toronto
Eastern Construction played an important part to help Evergreen achieve the goal of creating a destination which has a “triple bottom line”—sustainable environmentally, culturally and financially. Located at the former Don Valley Brick Works on Bayview Ave north of Bloor, Evergreen is a national non-profit environmental organization with a mandate to bring nature into cities through naturalization projects.
The “Industrial Pad” at the Brick Works contains 16 buildings. Evergreen planned to transform the former industrial pad into a sustainable multi-use complex dedicated to the idea of nature in the city. The emphasis was on active learning. All of the existing buildings were re-used. There is one new building—a LEED Platinum Administration Centre that showcases the latest in sustainable design. Other buildings contain an organic market, a restaurant, event and conference space, a native plant nursery, demonstration gardens, a children’s play facility, ice skating, and interpretive facilities to highlight the industrial heritage of the site.
