Earlier this month TRCA held the ceremonial ground breaking for its new headquarters, to be located adjacent York University.  The facility will measure over 80,000 sq ft and will be constructed using mass timber.  The TRCA ground breaking marks the second mass timber office building to be underway with Eastern Construction, with two larger mass timber projects in the wings for 2020.

The TRCA Headquarters will participate in the Canadian Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building Pilot Program and has targeted the Toronto Green Standard Tier II, LEED Platinum, and WELL Silver certification.  Sustainable design features include a rooftop solar array, four solar chimneys, energy-saving waterwalls, electric vehicle charging stations, and rainwater harvesting to irrigate the green roof.

Eastern Construction has been awarded the contract for an Addition and Renovation to the University of Toronto Schools located at 371 Bloor Street in Toronto.  The project includes the restoration of heritage facades, interior renovation of the historical east wing consisting of 58,000 SF, and a new addition of approximately 63,000 SF.  Major design features include:

  • Skylight atrium connecting the renovation and addition with amphitheatre seating
  • 700 seat Auditorium
  • Black Box Theatre/Drama Classroom
  • Library and Learning Commons
  • Athletic spaces including full size gymnasium, changerooms and cardio room
  • Multipurpose room
  • Specialized classrooms for music, art and science
  • Media Lab and creativity Maker Studios

The University of Toronto Schools has a long standing reputation as an educational provider in Toronto.  Established in 1906, UTS became an independent not-for-profit school affiliated with the University of Toronto in 2006.

Eastern Construction will again collaborate with Kitestring, a Hamilton-based creative branding studio, to rejuvenate the corporate website in lockstep with the fit-out of our new headquarters designed by SGH Design Partners.  The new website will launch in the fourth quarter of 2018.

Eastern Construction has been selected as the successful proponent to provide Design-Build Services for the new General Academic and Student Building at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) in Oshawa.  With an overall current budget of $33 million, the project will encompass approximately 80,000 square feet over multiple floors and will include Classrooms (480 seats), Administration & Academic Offices, Study & Social areas and Dry Project & Research Labs.  This new facility will also house the Office of Student Life and the UOIT Student Union.  The core Design-Build Team includes Montgomery Sisam Architects & Architectural Counsel Inc in Joint Venture, RJC and Crossey Engineering.

Securing the project through a stipulated sum tender, Eastern has been selected to build the Bessarion Community Centre located adjacent Sheppard Avenue East, between Bayview and Leslie.

Designed by to MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects, the Bessarion Community Centre will serve Bayview Village and Concord Park Place.  The multi-function facility will house the following elements:

Recreation space comprised of a double gymnasium with change rooms, indoor running track, fitness studio, weight room, art rooms, preschool room, games room, community hall with kitchen, multi-purpose rooms

Six-lane lap pool, 25M in length

Leisure pool with water play features

Toronto Public Library branch

Childcare centre for 52 children with outdoor play areas

Underground parking for approximately 200-cars
