PRIMARY FUNCTION: Prepare and or coordinate the preparation of estimates. Identifies both the inherent risk and revenue opportunities. Solicits pricing from the subcontractors and is involved in closing the tender. Supervise the work of more junior estimators.
- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Planning & Scheduling: Establishes and/ or works with established priorities and develops and implements a comprehensive schedule ensuring accurate sequencing and resource allocation to meet strategic project goals.
Pricing & Quantity Take Off: Expert knowledge and ability to accurately prepare quantity take offs for all 16 divisions of work and establish relevant pricing for identified quantities. Able to develop strong conceptual estimating skills – able to foresee issues and understand the big picture and what implications if any there are to the project.
Risk Management: Upon the review and coordination of drawings and specifications, proactively analyzes possible risks (i.e. schedule) identifying laps and gaps, with recommended solutions. Promptly escalates all issues, questions, and concerns to the Chief Estimator.
Budgeting & Costing: Prepares preliminary budgets and provides ongoing costing assistance identifying potential cost savings opportunities for Eastern and/or the client as required.

Also, provides ongoing feedback and appropriate resources to complete tasks assigned.
Networking: Establishes and maintains a professional network of key contacts and sub contractors. Assists sub contractors with pricing activities and is responsive to trade questions and concerns in order to continue to foster key relationships.
Excellent Oral & Written Communication Skills: Is able to both effectively present ideas to others, as well as, compose clear and concise communication, which delivers the message and is clearly understood.
Listening, Understanding & Responding: Listens, understands, and responds appropriately to the concerns of others by being receptive to new information, seeking out the facts before drawing conclusions, and showing a willingness to see things from another person's perspective. After assessing the issue, takes the appropriate action to achieve resolution via verbal or written communication.
- JOB KNOWLEDGE & TECHNICAL SKILLS:
Construction Methods & Practices: Proficient knowledge of construction practices, materials and methods. Comprehensive understanding of how subcontractors bid projects based on knowledge of scope of work for all 16 divisions. Ability to assist with bid closing process based on experience level.
Contracts, Drawings & Specifications: Ability to understand and interpret contract documents, shop drawings, and specifications as they relate to Eastern, the client and all subcontractors including scope of work, exclusions, clauses, and limitations. A strong understanding of how to incorporate addendums into existing estimates.
Computer Skills: Ability to proficiently use estimating software to effectively and accurately prepare quantity take offs, estimates and budgets. Knowledge of On Screen Take Off software an asset.
INITIATIVE & SELF-MANAGEMENT:
Organization & Time Management: Maintain files and documentation in a highly organized manner. Ability to react to changing priorities with a sense of urgency in order to meet project deadlines.
Accuracy & Attention to Detail: Ensures a high level of accuracy and pays close attention to detail when calculating quantities and estimates ensuring all sections have been thoroughly reviewed and accounted for.
- EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Education: University Degree or College Diploma in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology/Architecture or Construction Management. PQS Designation an asset.
Experience & Skills:
Minimum of 7+ Years Industry Experience.
Experience in leading a small team of estimators in lump sum or budgeting exercises.
Must have conceptual estimating experience
Has a thorough understanding of all tendering procedures and a strong track record.
Can estimate any project from start to finish with minimal guidance from Chief Estimator.
Will supervise and provide guidance to the junior / intermediate Estimators.
